Bound in later (19th or early 20th century) 1/2 tan calf with marbled boards and marbled endsheets. Leather rubbed and edgeworn as is the cover paper. Hinges somewhat dry but still holding. Nicely done gilt tooling in the panels on the spine. The binding is somewhat incongruous with the work but not unattractive. The binder has trimmed to top edge of the entire book leaving a small margin, not affecting any text. Marbled endsheets, front top corner of the front pastedown shows some remnants of a removed bookplate. Interior pages are mostly quite white and bright, a few sections with varying browning and a few pages with moderate areas of foxing. Overall text is quite crisp and readable. Illustrated with numerous woodcut illustrations and diagrams throughout the book. An exceedingly scarce edition of this important work that rarely appears for sale.
