Bound in possibly contemporary blind tooled brown smooth calf, rubbed, edgewear, spine ends somewhat chipped, joints somewhat tender but holding. Spine show ancient paper labels with neat roman letter "D" in the top panel, and "1" and "5" in panels 2 & 6, respectively. Worn but very presentable on the shelf. Interior pages generally quite clean and bright with some occasional foxing. Front pastedown showing some very old library labels, a few light pencil notes and 2 smallish letters and numbers in old ink, possible a shelf location or previous owners info. Lovely two color title page with a striking engraved decoration. Varying sizes of interesting and attractive initial letters scattered throughout the book. Taken from a history of the early Church by Philostorgius (c. 368 - c. 440) , no longer extant, this by the Byzantine scholar Photius (c. 810 - c. 893 ) who found a copy at his library in Constantinople. Main body of the text is followed by a series of critical essays. OCLC 1035580472. Appears rarely at auction or elsewhere for sale. Overall quite a decent, attractive copy.
