Or, The Way and Method of exercising horse & foot, according to the practice of this present time. With a treatise of all sorts of arms and engines of war, of fire-works, ensigns, and other military instruments, both ancient and modern by Robert Harford, Printed for Robert Harford at the Angel in Cornhill, 1680. Small 4to, 6" x 3.75" [i], [16],31, [1],143, [1] pp. 17 of 21 plates present, including the frontis. Bound in what appears to be the original full dark brown sheep. Blind tooled lines to the covers and spine, no evidence of label or title on the spine. Quite worn, in an attractive way... Extraneous small tabs of old leather attached to the spine top and bottom obviously as protection and support. Interior joints are separated, but the hinges are intact and boards a bit loose but still attached. Interior pages are generally quite good with some foxing/browning throughout with occasional light chipping. Front pastedown has been overlaid with some sort of textile type material. First blank page quite chipped and brown with a few old pencil notes. Frontis bottom corner missing with some loss but neatly repaired. Three plates missing from the first section including foldouts. Plates are generally in very nice clean, clear condition just a bit of wear here and there. Page 67/68 has a long, clean cross page tear with no loss. Truly a fascinating read. The nuts and bolts of military equipment and some tactics of the time. From types of swords carried described and who would have carried them to making exploding cannonballs, "pikes" to deter men and horses, to musket use and on and on. Concise and well written as well. One other interesting point is the early inclusion of Advertisements for the Author's other titles. One appearing just at the start of the book and one as the last page. This title has it all. Great information, interesting images and very scarce, rarely appearing for sale or at auction.
