Plutarch (Plutarchi) Of Chaeronea (C.56-120 A. D. ) PLUTARCHI CHAERONEI PHILOSOPHI HISTORICI QUE CLARISSI MI OPUSCULA MORALIA 1549: Lyon, Sebastianus Gryphius (Sebastien Gryphe) 8vo 568 pp G/ Complete with all pages; [55], 568, [2]. Errors in pagination in the preliminary index, the folios appear to be incorrectly printed leaving the index out of alphabetical order but still complete. Bound in somewhat limp vellum with tiny yapp edges, most certainly contemporary with exposed vellum sewing supports and remnants of vellum ties at the fore edge. Quite stained, worn and darkened but still intact. A brilliant attempt at a title on the spine hand written in very old ink, quite nicely lettered. Also very early writing on the bottom edge giving part of the title and author's name. A few doodles in mostly very light, very old ink on the front cover. The inner hinge at the rear shows a bit of separation but the covers are well attached and the binding is quite solid and tight. Both pastedowns replaced at some point, running just over the hinge onto the flyleaves. First leaf showing a very early two line inscription in early ink, laid on and almost appears to be a crude effort at a bookplate, difficult to decipher. Also, some repair to the first leaf near the spine. Title page and first few pages with some chipping to the bottom edge but very minor. Uneven foxing and browning throughout the book with some areas quite bright and others darkened, but the paper is generally in good shape, still supple and very readable. Beautifully printed with lovely decorated initial letters scattered throughout the book. The title page displays a lovely printers device and one unusual diagram appears on page 140. Someone has included their own version of the diagram in light pencil at the bottom of the facing pages but not affecting any text. Small, tidy marginal notes appearing in a few places. This less known work of Plutarch is a collection of essays and transcribed speeches providing a window in to life in the 1st Century and includes lessons in morality, virtue, education along with other subjects. This edition is quite scarce, rarely appearing for sale and a small number appearing in the various online catalogues. Apartment Smallish limp dark vellum 900.00
